President Donald Trump reversed years of long-standing policy in Syria supporting and working with Kurdish fighters in the region based off of a call with Turkish authoritarian Recep Tayyip Erdogan, sending shockwaves throughout the world. The Kurds, our longstanding allies, who had been holding ISIS prisoner’s captive after the fall of the ISIS caliphate, went from being our allies to having to prepare for an invasion by the Turks. This unprecedented betrayal of our allies has reopened the doors for an ISIS resurgence, more instability in the Middle East, and it makes the United States look weak. We must be willing to fight for our alliances and for our partners that trust us. Otherwise we risk further humiliation on the global stage and irreparable harm to our foreign policy in the future.
