Long-time community advocate announces bid for Fort Myers City Council

Cindy Lyn Banyai is running for Fort Myers City Council Ward 4 on her record of service

Dr. Cindy Lyn Banyai announces her bid for Fort Myers City Council Ward 4, serving downtown, midtown, Edison Park, Allen Park, and Jefferson Park. She is a teacher, a small business owner, and a nonprofit leader.

“I’m so excited to get to work for the people of Fort Myers,” Banyai says. “I know we can do so much more when everyone has a voice at the table.”

Banyai has been a decorated professional in the field of community development for over 20 years, collaborating with nonprofits around the world on issues such as homelessness, addiction, education, conservation, and sustainable development. She is running for City Council to be the servant leader Fort Myers deserves.

“Fortunately, I have been on ground serving many causes in our city – education, conservation, housing, and recovery. I see the needs we have and know the resources we can throw at them.” Dr. Banyai states.

Cindy Lyn Banyai the fighter goes all the way back to her childhood. She watched her young parents struggle and sacrifice to give her opportunities to grow and chase her education dreams. As an undergraduate, Cindy studied international relations and psychology at Michigan State University. During this time, Cindy debuted as a pro boxer. She interned twice in Congress, with both Democratic and Republican leaders, before taking an opportunity to travel to Asia. Once overseas, Cindy completed a Master’s and PhD from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan with her research focusing on community development, public administration, evaluation and governance. While living in Japan, Cindy was a sponsored pro boxer from 2005 to 2009. Boxing taught her how to prepare for a fight, plan attacks, anticipate your opponent, and use those advantages to win.

Banyai continues, “Boxing has a special place in my heart, which is why I have been working to bring the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame’s permanent museum to Fort Myers. It’s a place where the stories of hard scrabble folks get told and it will an amazing boon to our already vibrant tourist destination.”

When she returned to the US, Cindy moved to Fort Myers and settled in the community she has come to love. She grew her family --- adding three kids and pets as she built a life back in the states. Cindy has never strayed from being hands-on involved in the neighborhoods and with the people she cares about. Cindy teaches American Government at a local university, while also serving in leadership roles in regional non-profits. She has also founded her own small business to provide organizational and management consulting to businesses across the globe.
