Fort Myers, FL – On January 6, 2021 a mob of Trump supporters breached the US Capitol building directly after listening to a speech by Donald Trump just outside. The breach resulted in the death of 4 people, the injury of more than 50 law enforcement officers, the destruction of our national landmark, and the disruption of the work of our government in executing our democratic processes. The event is tantamount to a coup attempt to usurp US democratic processes to certify Joe Biden as the next president of the United States. This is evidenced by the level of planning by participants through platforms such as Parler, participants wearing shirts saying “Civil War,” and action at the behest of the outgoing president.

Dr. Cindy Banyai, 2020 Democratic Nominee for US House of Representatives Florida 19, supports holding all accountable for the seditious acts committed around the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Dr. Banyai wants to see members of Congress who objected to the election expelled. She also wants to see the arrest and prosecution of everyone who breached Capitol security, as well as those who destroyed and stole property, injured law enforcement officers, and terrorized elected officials. Dr. Banyai also holds Donald Trump accountable for inciting the violence and mob reaction and supports the pursuit of use of the 25th Amendment and impeachment.

Dr. Banyai stated “I, like the majority of Americans, am profoundly disturbed by the events at the US Capitol yesterday. Our democracy is more in peril today than it has been since the civil war.”

She goes on “Now is not the time for weakness. With the world watching our nation being attacked from within, we need to do everything possible to preserve our democracy. Every person who played a part in yesterday’s attack needs to be held accountable. This includes the mob that entered the Capitol building, including Southwest Florida conservative Facebook activist Brendon Leslie, the Congressional members engaging in divisive political theater that questioned our election integrity, including Rep. Byron Donalds, and Donald Trump for his incendiary speech questioning our election with fraudulent claims that incited the mob to action.”

Dr. Banyai continues “I have researched governments around the world and worked with officials from numerous countries to create strong institutions that serve the people. I have been alarmed by the Trump administration’s desire to hobble our nation through the systematic gutting of our government agencies and disinvestment, along with his nepotism and grift of government funds through use of his properties that violate the emoluments clause. Even before Trump, the US was on a slow slide toward authoritarianism under Republican leadership and Trump shoved us over the edge. We are at great risk of becoming a petty dictatorship and a failed state. This is why it is imperative we act now to end the further ambitions of Donald Trump and his sycophants.”

Dr. Cindy Banyai was the 2020 Democratic Nominee for US House of Representatives Florida 19, spanning coastal Southwest Florida from Cape Coral to Marco Island. She is a mom of 3 native Floridians and a small business owner. Dr. Banyai has been a decorated professional in the field of community development for almost 20 years, collaborating with nonprofits around the world on issues such as homelessness, children’s services, education, and sustainable development. She has also researched and published extensively on good governance around the world. Dr. Banyai is continuing the fight for our water, our health, and our community. She believes we need to lift the voices of the people to be on the same level as politicians and CEOs and to create a country where the sun shines on everyone.
